- IMPORTANT CONVERSION INFORMATION
-
- All users will have to convert their macro files. Users of
- versions earlier than 3.0 will have to convert them more than once.
- Pick the appropriate version you are at and follow all of the
- instructions that follow:
-
-
- Version 1.1 or earlier:
-
- Users with version 1.1 or earlier will have to send us a disk and
- self-addressed stamped disk mailer and we will put a copy of
- conv1to2 conversion progam on. There was not space on the disk to
- accommodate everything we wished to put on it. Since version 1.1
- is now 2 1/2 years old this should affect few users.
-
- Version 2.2 or earlier:
-
- 1. Make sure Newkey is not currently loaded.
-
- 2. Load version 2.4 of Newkey. It is called "new24.exe" on your
- disk.
-
- 3. Run the convedit program and follow instructions.
-
-
- Version 3.0 or earlier:
-
- 1. Run the conv3to4 program and follow instructions.
-
-
- VERSION 4.0 IS ONCE AGAIN USER-SUPPORTED (ie. SHAREWARE) SOFTWARE
-
- With the release of version 4.0 we are reinstating Newkey as
- user-supported software. For details refer to section 16.4,
- 'Restricted Permission to Copy', or in Newkey.doc.
-
-
- TO USERS OF IBM'S NEW 'ENHANCED KEYBOARD' *** IMPORTANT ***
-
- Because Newkey works a little differently with the new "enhanced
- keyboard" it is necessary to reconfigure some of Newkey's hot
- keys. The batch file "enhanced" will do this for you and tell you
- which hot keys have been updated. This is necessary because the
- default hot keys will not work on the enhanced keyboard. Of
- course you may instead reconfigure the hot keys yourself. Please
- refer to section 15.5, 'IBM'S ENHANCED KEYBOARD' in the manual for
- further information.
-
- The guided tour uses many of these hot keys and refers to them by
- their default values. You will have to recognize that the hot key
- defaults have changed. These changes are:
-
- old new Description
- ---- --- -----------
- ctrl/ alt/ Pop-up features
- ctrl3 alt[ Slow typing on request
- ctrl4 alt] Slow typing off request
- ctrlesc ctrl\ Cancel macro playback
- cutpaste altp Cut & paste playback
-
- NOTE: The manual states that you have to reconfigure the <alt,>
- key also. This is an error. You do not have to reconfigure this
- key.
-
- CUT AND PASTE ENHANCED!
-
- Newkey's cut and paste feature has been substantially upgraded
- since we sent the manual to the printers. It is now possible to
- invoke cut and paste through Newkey's own macros. And Newkey now
- uses 3K less memory! Several of you have requested this feature
- and here it is. The only differences you should notice otherwise
- is that you can no longer change the area being cut and the cut
- area will be displayed in monochrome rather than color if you are
- using a color monitor.
-
-
- FORCE NEWKEY TO LOAD
- TO USERS OF WARM BOOT PROGRAMS
-
- Due to Newkey's new method of determining whether it is loaded it
- is now possible that Newkey will think it is loaded when in fact
- it isn't. In order to force Newkey to load add an "/f" on the
- command line. For example:
-
- newkey /f
- newkey/4000/f
-
- The most likely time this will be necessary is when you are using
- a warm boot program which preserves certain areas of the
- computer's memory (JBOOT, for example)
-
- ADDITIONAL FILES ON THE NEWKEY DISK
-
- These files are not documented in the Newkey manual.
-
- DATE.KEY - sample date and time macros. New to version 4.0.
-
-
- The following macro files and documentation were developed by
- Newkey users. If you develop macro files which you would like to
- share with other Newkey users send them to us and we will include
- them on the Newkey disk if space permits and we judge them
- appropriate.
-
-
- 123.KEY - General purpose macros for use with Lotus 123.
-
- 123KEY.DOC - Documentation for 123.key
-
- BOX.KEY - Macros to draw boxes, documentation included with
- macros.
-
-
- COMPATIBILITY ISSUES
-
- Because of its extended features, version 4.0 has raised several
- new compatibility problems which did not exist with earlier
- versions. For the most part these problems are not insurmountable
- and are documented in the new User's Guide, but we have received
- enough requests for assistance that we have decided to include
- this additional section.
-
- The two primary problems we are hearing about are:
-
- 1. Other memory-resident programs can no longer read keystrokes.
- When invoked it appears that they have hung up or will not read
- certain keystrokes. Try turning off the extended keyboard buffer
- feature and/or changing the load order.
-
- 2. Certain keys, such as shift enter, appear to be ignored. Try
- defining shift enter as enter. See Appendix C.
-
- WORDSTAR 4.0
-
- Wordstar 4.0 works a little differently than Wordstar 3.3.
- If you feed keystrokes back too quickly to Wordstar 4.0 it will
- discard them, Wordstar 3.3 did not. To get around this just make
- sure that slow typing mode is on when Newkey macros execute.
-
- POPULAR PROGRAMS POP-UPS PROGRAMS
-
- Version 4.0 of Newkey is now fully compatible with the pop-up
- series of programs.
-
- HOMEBASE
-
- This advice has been passed on by a user of Homebase.
-
- 1. Turn off Newkey's extended buffer or instruct Homebase to not
- use its own buffer (set option k0 0).
-
- 2. Turn off Homebase's Clock Display (set option -c0 0) or
- Newkey's CAP/NUM display.
-
- CRUISE CONTROL
-
- This advice has been passed on by a user of Cruise Control
- (although I'm not sure why you would want to continue using Cruise
- Control when you have Newkey 4.0, let me know if you think I'm
- wrong).
-
- 1. Redefine Cruise Control's hot key by running "CRUISE/R" first.
-
- 2. Turn off Newkey's extended buffer.
-
- 3. Turn off either Newkey's or Cruise control's screen saver
- feature.
-
